Our Operations

Greenhouse Gas Reduction

Chelsea has a long history of reducing environmental impact by investing in energy reduction initiatives.

By 2030 ongoing investment in technology that not only reduces energy intensity, but also supports a switch from natural gas to renewable energy sources will be pursued for our sites.

Chelsea supports further Greenhouse Gasses reduction by committing to the purchase of 100% renewable electricity from 2022 onwards.

By continuing to stay informed of latest technology improvements, investing in green technologies as they become affordable, Chelsea has aligned with the New Zealand Government target of achieving a carbon net zero operation by 2050.

Chelsea is committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) through our majority shareholder Wilmar International group, who signed up to the initiative in October 2022. The GHG emissions reductions efforts described here forms part of Wilmar’s group wide climate commitments and targets.

Measurement

We will complete the measurement of our Scope 3 emissions and start building Scope 3 reduction plans with our supply base

1
Greenhouse gas emissions

We will reduce our scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 30% from a 2020 base

Net Zero CarbonChelsea refinery operations will be net zero carbon.

Water and Waste Reduction

By applying continuous improvement techniques and investing in technology, Chelsea have been working to reduce the volume of water required to process sugar. We will continue to invest time and capital to reduce the use of this precious resource.

For many years Chelsea has separated and recycled waste in the form of packaging, steel, food waste and by-products from the refining process.

Chelsea is committed to continue to find ways to eliminate the disposal of waste to land-fill.
