Chelsea Sugar and the Environment
Chelsea Sugar is one of only a handful of New Zealand companies that has withstood the test of time. It was operating when Mt Tarawera erupted, survived the great depression of the 1930’s and two world wars and has lasted through successive governments. The Chelsea Refinery still continues to operate in its original location on the seafront at Birkenhead however in a very different environment to when it started business back in the 1800’s.
Modern day businesses are becoming more conscious of how their operations impact on the world around them and that to continue operating in a forever changing environment they must operate in a more sustainable way.
For Chelsea Sugar, working sustainably means making sure that the business delivers value financially, environmentally and socially. A sustainable business is one that is in touch with its people and the community around them, is aware of opportunities, innovative in its responses and environmentally and socially responsible in its operations.
At Chelsea we are committed to mitigating any adverse impacts the business might have on the environment and resources that have allowed it to operate since 1884. We operate our facilities in a manner that complies with environmental legislation and regulations and we integrate the principles of sustainability into our strategies, business plans and consider it in all our operations. Chelsea has proven its commitment by seeking an internationally recognised environmental accreditation under ISO 14001, which we achieved in 2004 and maintain this accreditation through continuous improvement in the way we do business.
We are committed to improving our operational processes, which will enable us to reduce energy and water use and the generation of solid, liquid and gaseous wastes.
Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) is a critical part of how we do business, it is embedded in our values system and is an integral part of the Chelsea culture.
